So, I ended up doing blue nail art designs the other day. Wasn’t really my plan, to be honest. It all started with a sweater, believe it or not.

I’d ordered this blue sweater online, right? Looked perfect on the website. When it arrived, totally different shade. Looked like something my grandma would wear to a bingo night she wasn’t even excited about. So, I had to send it back. Then the replacement was the wrong size. It was a whole thing. Finally, after what felt like ages, the right sweater, in the right blue, showed up. And I thought, okay, now I need to celebrate this tiny, stupid victory.

Getting Started with the Blues

I figured, why not match my nails to the sweater? Seemed like a good enough reason. I rummaged through my polish collection – it’s a bit of a jumble in a shoebox, not gonna lie. Found a few blues that looked promising. I had:

  • A deep, almost navy blue.
  • A brighter, sky blue.
  • And a sparkly, glittery blue that always cheers me up.

First things first, I had to prep my nails. This is the boring bit, but you gotta do it. So, I filed them a bit, pushed back my cuticles – gently, because I’m not trying to injure myself here – and then slapped on a base coat. I learned my lesson years ago about skipping base coat; ended up with yellow nails for weeks. Not a good look.

The Actual Painting Part

Okay, so with the base coat dry, I went for the deep navy on most of my nails. Two coats, as usual, to get it nice and opaque. My hands aren’t the steadiest, so there was a bit of cleanup needed around the edges. I keep an old makeup brush and some acetone handy for exactly this reason. It’s a lifesaver.

For my ring fingers, I decided to do something a bit different. I used the sky blue as a base. Then, once that was dry, I took the sparkly blue and just dabbed a bit near the tips, trying for a sort of subtle glitter fade. It didn’t exactly look professional, more like a happy accident, but I was okay with it. I wasn’t aiming for perfection, just something… blue.

I thought about getting fancy, trying stripes or dots with a toothpick, but honestly, I was running out of patience. Plus, the sweater saga had drained enough of my intricate planning energy for one day. Sometimes simple is better, right?

Finishing Touches and Thoughts

After everything was dry, and I mean really dry (I definitely smudged one nail by being impatient and had to redo it, ugh), I put on a thick top coat. This stuff is magic, makes everything look shinier and helps the polish last a bit longer than five minutes.

So there they were, my blue nails. They weren’t salon quality, not by a long shot. A bit messy up close, if I’m being honest. But you know what? They were blue. They matched my hard-won sweater. And looking down at them actually made me feel pretty good. It’s funny how a little bit of color can do that.

It wasn’t a groundbreaking nail art session, just me, a few bottles of polish, and a desire to do something small for myself. Sometimes that’s all it takes. And hey, at least my nails looked decent while I finally wore that new sweater.
