Alright, let’s talk about putting together that Drew Barrymore look from the start of Scream. You know the one – Casey Becker, the phone call, everything. It’s such an iconic horror movie moment, and I really wanted to nail it for a costume party.

Getting Started: The Vision

First off, I rewatched that opening scene like, five times. Gotta get the details right, you know? It’s actually a pretty simple outfit when you break it down, but getting the vibe correct is key. The main things I knew I needed were:

  • That specific beige-ish, maybe slightly oversized sweater.
  • The blonde bob wig.
  • Some classic light-wash jeans.
  • Maybe some fake blood, depending on how gruesome I wanted to get.

The Hunt for the Sweater

Okay, finding the sweater was the first big hurdle. It needed to look comfy, kinda lived-in, and be that specific off-white, maybe light tan color. I started by digging through my own closet – no luck. Then I hit up a few thrift stores. Found some okay-ish ones, but none screamed “Casey Becker” at me. I ended up searching online, which took a while. Finally found a knit sweater that looked pretty close in color and texture. It wasn’t super baggy, but it worked well enough once I got it.

Nailing the Hair

Next up: the wig. This was easier, thankfully. Plenty of short blonde bobs out there for costumes. I just looked for one that had that straight cut and bangs. Didn’t want anything too fancy or styled, just that simple, girl-next-door look from the movie. Found a decent one pretty quickly online. When it arrived, I just shook it out, popped it on, and honestly, it made a huge difference instantly.

Jeans and Shoes

The jeans were simple. I just grabbed a pair of my own light-wash denim jeans. Nothing fancy, just regular straight-leg jeans. She’s wearing sneakers in the scene, I think? Or maybe just barefoot indoors. I just wore some simple canvas shoes I already had, figured they wouldn’t be the focus anyway.

Putting It All Together

So, I laid everything out: the sweater, the jeans, the wig. Tried it all on. Looking in the mirror, it felt pretty good! The sweater and wig really sell the look. It felt instantly recognizable, which was exactly what I was going for.

I did debate adding the fake blood for that post-Ghostface encounter effect. Found some stage blood and did a little splatter on the sweater and a bit near the shoulder. Didn’t want to overdo it, just enough to hint at the horror. It definitely added that extra ‘oomph’ to the costume.

And that was pretty much it! Finding the right sweater took the most effort, but the rest came together quite easily. It’s a simple but really effective costume if you get those key pieces right. Definitely felt cool embodying that iconic opening scene for a night.
